2012

Steven meets Churchill Downs jockey
Travelin' with Steven:  June 20-30, 2012

An 11-day romp through parts of the American Heartland with our 9-year-old nephew and stellar travel buddy, Steven.  We checked out some significant historic sites, saw the construction of some quintessentially American products and visited the world's largest—and best—children's museum.  And we learned how to pick the ponies at the famed Churchill Downs thoroughbred racetrack.  Below is our trip map for our journey with Steven.  Clicking on each placemark will bring up a brief summary of that day as well as a link to the blog post(s) for the location.

On the History Highway:  March 16-May 14, 2012

Re-enactors at St. Johns Church, Richmond, VA
An amazing 60-day tour of battlefields, monuments and other historic sites along the eastern seaboard of the U.S.  Our agenda included all 13 of the original American colonies, so our paths constantly took us to places significant in the early history of our country.  In addition, almost three-fourths of Civil War battles were fought in the states we visited.  We were consistently impressed with the work that preservationists at all government levels, as well as philanthropists and volunteers in the private sector, have done to ensure that generations to come will have the opportunity to find these hallowed grounds much the way they were when they were at history's center stage.

Below is our trip map for our jaunt down the History Highway.  Clicking on each placemark will bring up a brief summary of that day as well as a link to the blog post(s) for the location.  And our post about the highlights (and lowlights) of the trip is here:  History Never Gets Old

To Big Bend and Back:  January 5-January 29, 2012

Tuff Canyon, Big Bend National Park
A 23-day adventure to one of America's most remote national parks—Big Bend National Park on the Texas-Mexico border.  A remarkable variety of topography awaited us in this stunningly beautiful desert terrain.  Unforgettable experience!

The map below traces our route.  Clicking on each placemark will bring up a brief summary of that day as well as a link to the blog post(s) for the location.
